South Elgin, Streamwood on collision course againFeb 7, 2014 8:36 PM - If seeds hold, Fox Valley area girls basketball fans could be in for a treat come regional final Thursday in Class 3A and Class 4A. The IHSA released pairings for the postseason on Friday and in Class 4A, South Elgin and Streamwood could meet for the third straight year in a regional final, this time at Jacobs. The Sabres beat South Elgin last year before advancing to the sectional finals and falling to Huntley. In 2012, South Elgin beat Streamwood in the regional final before losing to Cary-Grove in the sectional semifinals.

Larkin will honor St. John Friday nightFeb 6, 2014 10:26 PM - Elgin-area superfan Dave St. John will be recognized at halftime of Friday night's boys basketball game between Larkin and Elgin for his unwavering support of the athletic programs of each high school. St. John, 77, has deep ties to both schools. He is a 1954 graduate of Elgin High, where he met his wife, Nila (Class of '56). The couple's five sons later attended Larkin. Three played sports. St. John soon became a fixture at Larkin sporting events. He even worked the chains for Royals home football games for 10 years. "That's when I got hooked," he said.

S. Elgin, Huntley, Burlington C. draw top seedsFeb 6, 2014 9:09 PM - There were few surprises Thursday when the IHSA released the seeds for the upcoming Class 3A and Class 4A girls basketball postseason. In Class 4A, all Fox Valley area teams feed into the Judson University supersectional, which will be hosted by Westminster Christian. Sectional winners from Addison Trail and Crystal Lake South will meet in that Elite Eight game.

Jacobs, Dundee-Crown looking for postseason successFeb 6, 2014 7:39 PM - This year's IHSA girls' bowling state series features a new twist. A regional level of competition has been added where the top 4 teams in each regional and the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the sectional round. Regionals get underway Saturday morning. District 300 neighbors Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are two Fox Valley-area teams looking to carry over regular-season success into the new postseason format.

Rafferty in fine form; Prairie Ridge wins at Lake ParkFeb 5, 2014 10:54 PM - Elk Grove's Amelia Rafferty started the season on the sidelines, but the Grenadiers senior came back with a vengeance. Rafferty injured her right hand in early November and did not return to the gym until late December, but she more than made up for lost time on Wednesday at the Lake Park regional. Rafferty was in a zone from start to finish in taking second place in the all-around (37.825). Prairie Ridge co-op was also locked in, securing the regional title with an impressive 148.375l points in Roselle.

Girls basketball/Fox Valley roundupFeb 5, 2014 10:22 PM - Bartlett 65, East Aurora 24: On Senior Night, Liz Arco had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Ally Giampapa added 11 points to lead the Hawks to an Upstate Eight Valley win. Lauren Janczak (15 points) and Kaitlin Brohan (10 points, 4 steals) also contributed for Bartlett (15-10, 8-3). Hampshire 58, Woodstock 36: Sara Finn and Emma Benoit each had 18 points to lead the Whip-Purs (9-13, 4-7) to a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win. Tricia Dumoulin added 8 points for the winners.

No injuries in Cary basement fireFeb 5, 2014 10:05 PM - No injuries were reported after a basement fire Wednesday night in Cary, authorities said. Cary firefighters responded to the home on the 300 block of East Sherwood Drive just after 6 p.m., and the fire was extinguished 15 minutes after firefighters arrived, according to the Cary Fire Protection District.
