Tragically, the sports world has suffered a great lossJan 23, 2015 9:46 PM - "Tragic" and "great" are two words misused and abused in sports. Reading or hearing the term "tragic loss" coupled with a game has always made me cringe. Ending up on the wrong end of the scoreboard in a game or meet should not be equated with losses that truly matter. Then there is the overuse of great. A great play, a great game or a great guy all get thrown around much too easily. But the shocking news about the death of Daily Herald sports writer Mike Spellman on Tuesday was truly a tragic loss of a great guy.

Students, athletes and friends mourn the loss of Fremd's BokorJan 8, 2015 9:00 PM - Rich Bokor spent the majority of his life helping kids get the most out of their lives. Whether it was in an advanced placement history class at Fremd, on a cross country course or in a track workout, Bokor's goal was to inspire and drive his students and athletes toward success that would last a lifetime. So, nothing changed for Bokor when he received a life-altering diagnosis of incurable colon cancer in September. The same philosophies he used for years to help others -- even after retiring from teaching and coaching at Fremd in 2003 -- would be followed to help himself in his greatest challenge. "All the stuff he coached and preached in coaching and the classroom ... he practiced what he preached," said close friend and Fremd boys track coach Jim Aikens. Bokor's fight ended Sunday at age 66. It was definitely much too soon for someone who still had plenty to give to others.

Winning's a blast for bright-minded BazsaliNov 21, 2014 8:16 PM - It turned out Bruce Bazsali still has the drive and enthusiasm he's possessed since he started high school coaching in 1967. Winning a total of 3 games in his first two years at Rockford Lutheran was progress for a program that had a combined 6 victories in the seven seasons before he took over. Now Bazsali has seen the payoff in a 31-5 record the last three years. It includes a trip to the Class 4A semifinals last season and a perfect season that came to a heartbreaking end in a 1-point quarterfinal loss to Phillips last Saturday.
