Rant about living in a staged house
Jul 20, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. As a faithful reader of your column and previous real estate agent, I thought I understood how the process would go when we put our house on the market this June. Little did I know how the process has changed since I was in the business.

Answering a purchase offer: yes, no or maybe
Jul 6, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. If you could answer me today that would be helpful. We are selling our home ourselves, and we got an offer this morning that is $8,000 less than we are asking. It's only good for 48 hours. My wife isn't sure about it. Can you discuss our options? We need advice right away.

Ensure your attorney reads real estate contract
Jun 29, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. We are buying our first home, and our parents say we should not sign a contract until our lawyer has OK'd it. What if we find a house we need to bid on in a hurry? For instance, what if we see it on a Sunday? What's your advice?

Even a 70-year-old renter may have reasons to buy
Jun 22, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. What do you think of an older person buying a house or a condo? I'll be 70 this year. I am single, and I have excellent credit. I've been looking for an apartment, and landlords seem to really jack up the prices, at least this time of year.

No broker involved in family house sale
Jun 16, 2019 10:18 AM - Q. I have a family member who would like to buy my senior parents' home in a closed sale (without a real estate agent) to avoid commissions. What are the pros and cons of such an arrangement? I'm a little wary of not including an experienced professional.

Select an agent you trust
Jun 1, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. We are about ready to put our house on the market, but here is the problem: Our neighbor across the street is a real estate broker. We haven't been particularly close with him, but we do know him. Is there a standard rule or advice about using a neighbor as our real estate agent? We sort of feel we shouldn't.

You pay for bank's appraisal
May 25, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. When we applied for a mortgage, the bank charged us for an appraisal. They said it was so they'd know how much it was safe to lend us. As the new owners of the house, we would like to see that appraisal. They say we can't. But we paid for it. Do we have the right to see it?

It is possible to coordinate sale, purchase of homes
May 18, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. Please give me an idea of how to coordinate the sale of my present home with the move-in date for my new home. We have a tentative date of August for the new house's completion.

Agents must present all offers to sellers
May 11, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. We recently signed an offer on a home and were told by the sellers' broker that no offers would be presented until the next day at 7 p.m. In the meantime, another broker wrote up an offer and hand-delivered it to the seller (bypassing the sellers' agent). The seller accepted that offer, and we were left completely out of the process (and out of the home). What recourse do we have?

Condo isn't selling despite desirable location
May 4, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. I've had a one-bedroom condo on the market with a Realtor for six weeks. There was a lot of interest at first and almost an offer, except the individual wants two bedrooms in the same building. The building, by the way, is in an extremely desirable location across the street from a popular shopping district that has everything a person needs -- banks, grocery stores, a pharmacy, etc.
