Traditions honored at Elgin firefighter memorialMay 12, 2012 2:04 PM - About 50 area residents attended the Elgin Area Firefighters Memorial Service held Saturday at the Elgin Fire Barn #5 Museum. Traditions "define who we were, and who we are," Huntley Fire Chief James Saletta said. Representatives of about a dozen local fire departments attended the ceremony.

Final bell sounds for fallen Huntley fire captainApr 18, 2012 6:35 PM - In nearly equal amounts of laughter and tears Wednesday, mourners sounded the last alarm for Huntley Fire Capt. John "Winky" Winkelman, who was killed in Crystal Lake while riding his motorcycle last week. More than 450 people filled St. John's Lutheran Church in Union for Winkelman's funeral, and about 300 of them were from his and surrounding fire departments.

The 20-year veteran of the department was riding on Route 176 when a vehicle pulled out in front of him, according to police. Firefighters are mourning "Winky," who they say was a fixture of the department.

Huntley fire kills 73-year-old man, hurts firefighterNov 4, 2011 4:58 PM - A Friday morning fire in Huntley's Sun City development killed a man believed to be 73 years old and injured a firefighter, authorities confirmed this afternoon. Kane County Coroner Chuck West said he doesn't have a positive identification yet on the man and authorities are trying to find next of kin. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.
