Robert Morris U. unveils new gym with Bo Jackson's helpOct 19, 2013 5:00 PM - What had been an aging gym and football field at an Arlington Heights alternative high school has been transformed into a mecca for a growing private university's athletic programs. Robert Morris University embarked this year on an $11.5 million athletic facilities improvement project at the Arlington Heights campus it shares with Forest View Alternative School at 2123 S. Goebbert Road. And the students got a major inspirational boost from football and baseball legend Bo Jackson.

Basketball tourney about sportsmanship, not just scoreMar 23, 2013 5:19 PM - As top college basketball teams battled in March Madness matchups throughout the day Saturday, a tournament featuring 30 coed teams from Chicago area alternative schools focused more on sportsmanship than the final score. "Sportsmanship is what we're all about," said Sarah Lorenzi, chairwoman of the Chicago Area Alternative Education League's fundraising committee. "The biggest trophy is the sportsmanship award."

Decades of alumni sing thanks to retired choir directorNov 26, 2012 6:08 AM - More than three decades of alumni came together for a reunion concert to pay tribute and give thanks to the choir director who they said made such a difference in their lives. At least 150 singers who graduated from Forest View High School or Elk Grove High School gathered for two hours of singing led by Jerry Swanson. "It seems like just yesterday we were singing these songs for the first time," Swanson said.

D214 discussing facility improvements, BG pool renovationNov 20, 2012 2:38 PM - Northwest Suburban High School District 214 is considering $24 million in maintenance projects and facility improvements for the next year, including a major renovation to the pool at Buffalo Grove High School and finishing sound abatement at Elk Grove High School. While the total cost for projects for the 2013-2014 school year reaches $24 million, the cost to the district is only about $18 million because of contributions from other sources.

District 214 may offer more options for gym exemptionOct 5, 2012 5:35 AM - Northwest Suburban High School District 214 might allow a student to be exempt from gym class if he or she is member of a competitive marching band program or enrolled in the school Reserve Officer's Training Corps. "We have students staying up very late after marching band practice and then doing hours of homework," said Superintendent David Schuler. "This would give them an opportunity to have a study hall to get some of that work done during the day."

District 214 OKs code of conduct for coaches, advisersJul 12, 2012 10:42 PM - Starting this fall, all coaches and club advisers in Northwest Suburban High School District 214 must sign and adhere to a code of conduct outlining appropriate behavior standards, the school board decided on Thursday. "We hear every day about children bullying other children, but what about when it's the coaches or adviser bullying our children?" an Arlington Heights parent said.

Rolling Meadows woman's legacy lives on in self-defense programApr 22, 2012 8:00 AM - Losing a child is life-changing, but more than a decade after Shannon McNamara's death, her parents take comfort in the fact that it isn't just their lives that have changed, but those of more than a million young girls worldwide. After McNamara was murdered in her off-campus apartment at Eastern Illinois University in June 2001, her friend Erin Weed started a program called Girls Fight Back to spread a message of strength and self-defense.
