Dad takes growing and eating local to heart
Jan 17, 2011 10:40 PM - There's nothing halfway about the culinary transformation that's taken place during the past several years at the Zielinski household in Arlington Heights. From a diet that was too reliant on prepared foods, Andre, DeLynn and their three children are plowing new ground as well-informed foodies.

Italian upbringing nourishes suburban family
Jan 5, 2011 6:59 AM - What a cultural shock it must have been for then-11-year-old Ralph Cossentino when his family moved to Chicago in 1972. Back in Naples, Italy, the family led an Amish-like lifestyle.

They nourished our souls: Cooks of the Year 2010
Dec 28, 2010 11:31 AM - A wise kindergarten teacher once told me that the best parents are nurturers. The best cooks are the same way. Our Cooks of the Year reach far beyond the basic responsibility of providing nourishment, swirling soups and stews, cookies and pies into their whole-life philosophy.

IT guy by day, kitchen geek by night
Jan 4, 2011 12:06 PM - Like the chefs he watches on Food Network, Marty Beach takes a professional approach to home cooking, from mise en place to homemade stock, presentation to professional cookware. But it's obvious he's having a great time. "I have a lot of fun with cooking," says the Schaumburg father of two. "In 26 years of marriage I have cooked all but four or five meals. I realized early on, when I get home from work I can hit the couch or roll up my sleeves and start working." He prefers kitchen duty.

Figgy pudding, and a cup of good cheer
Dec 14, 2010 10:35 AM - If you're in the market to adopt a new family tradition for the holiday table this year, Nancy Carlson's Figgy Pudding -- without figs just may be the one. This dessert speaks to my taste buds, my funny bone and my love of old, family recipes and the memories they evoke.

Spreadsheets meet family recipes
Dec 7, 2010 11:03 AM - When you get creative as a financial accountant, indictments and a nice, cozy jail cell may result. So Deborah Peters plays it straight at work and cooks the books at home, so to speak. "I'm too soft for prison; I'm not going," she jokes. "Cooking is my creative outlet. Some people view it as a chore; it makes me happy." Still, her talent for being a self-styled, control- and organization-freak transfers well to the job of providing a hot meal each night for husband, Blair, and their daughters, Hannah, 11, and Kaitlyn, 6.

Nov 30, 2010 12:16 PM - To look at her, you'd never suspect Debra Solberg would be capable of pulling off the biggest neighborhood Cookie Heist of the past two decades, but alas, it's true. This kindhearted mother of two, who gives away dozens of Christmas cookies every year, tells all in an exclusive to the Daily Herald today. We're reasonably sure the statute of limitations has run out. Pretty sure, at least.

Nov 23, 2010 5:04 PM - If the mudslinging and name-calling of the recent midterm elections left you hankering for a candidate you can back with pride, here's a chance to vote in a national campaign that could impact millions of snackers, and help feed the hungry, too.

Big loser becomes big winner
Nov 16, 2010 11:42 AM - Mimi Brei wasn't a contestant on NBC's popular weight-loss reality show, but she's a big loser. On Dec. 23 Mimi will celebrate seven years since she had gastric bypass surgery and lost 150 pounds in 18 months, dropping to 177 from 327. She lost another 12 when she moved to Buffalo Grove and was able to walk to work as a scheduler at a doctor's office.

Child of the women's movement embraces homemaker role
Nov 9, 2010 12:11 PM - Debbie Pullaro came of age during a wave of women's rights activism in the 60s and 70s, but that "you can have it all" movement washed right over her. The enduring influence in her life was the "atmosphere of women" that made up her home and the traditional Southern culture of North Carolina. "In the South if you were a woman you were the homemaker, you raised the children and you knew how to cook," says Debbie, 51, now living in South Elgin.
