Stating the case for Rosemont's BallparkMay 23, 2013 11:20 PM - Several times Andy Nussbaum had driven past Rosemont on I-294. He found out Saturday what he was missing. On a perfect May night, Naperville Central's softball coach soaked in his first evening at the Ballpark at Rosemont before his Redhawks took the field. Just as much as the softball at the Bandits Jamboree, the structure left an impression. "What a great environment," Nussbaum remarked Saturday night, and his reiterated that comment later in the week. "Just by sheer venue, I'm much more likely to go to a Bandits game than a Sky basketball game just because it's such a nice park." Rosemont's hopes to lure the Cubs as the crown jewel of its revamped entertainment complex is probably a pipedream. Reeling in the state softball tournament shouldn't be.

Suddenly everyone's going deepApr 11, 2013 8:27 PM - Jerry Schilf must feel like the character from the movie "Back to the Future" who steps out of a time machine and doesn't recognize his own home town. The game of softball, it's a different world to Benet's coach these days. Schilf can recall being a part of three 1-0 sectional playoff games decided by wild pitches. A week ago, Schilf watched his little lefty Abbie Gerth slug a home run, and his team score 76 runs in four days. "I think honestly over time the game of softball has evolved," said Stephanie Abello, a sophomore on Schilf's Benet team. "Girls are getting stronger."

Until it forges a new future, Benet still relives the pastMar 14, 2013 10:27 PM - It's been said that a picture is worth 1,000 words, and how fitting was it last week when Benet's softball team tweeted a photo of outdoor practice in 8 inches of snow. Is there a team more itching to go than Benet? Doubtful. There was no more stunning score in last year's softball playoffs than Benet's 1-0 regional loss to Neuqua Valley. Not so much the result, but that Benet was shut out. Benet senior Maeve McGuire still isn't over it.
