Buyer remorse sets in for flyover country Trump voters
Aug 2, 2017 1:00 AM - Out here in flyover country, you can't hardly go by the feed store without running into a reporter doing one of those Wisdom of the Heartland stories. Seems like they could have saved themselves a bunch of trouble by listening to a Hank Williams Jr. album instead: "I live back in the woods, you see / My woman and the kids and the dogs, and me / I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a 4-wheel drive / And a country boy can survive ... " Until a few months ago, that was pretty much my life, although I'd have had a hard time without some real country boys' help. There wasn't a man on our road that couldn't do a dozen things I couldn't.

Follow the money to uncover Trump's ties to Russia
Feb 28, 2017 1:00 AM - Columnist Gene Lyons: If you think about it, no wonder Donald Trump prefers the imaginative stylings of Fox News to the Presidential Daily Briefing.

Bickering at New York Times let Trump off the hook
Jan 27, 2017 1:00 AM - Columnist Gene Lyons: Now that the horses have left the barn, trotted out the front gate and are galloping headlong down the county road, editors at The New York Times have taken to public bickering about who left the stalls unlatched.

'Hillbilly Elegy' raises provocative questions
Jan 13, 2017 1:00 AM - Columnist Gene Lyons: American Conservative columnist Rod Dreher has written that "Hillbilly Elegy" "does for poor white people what Ta-Nehisi Coates's book ("Between the World and Me") did for poor black people: give them voice and presence in the public square."

Trump wishes us all a happy thermonuclear new year
Jan 1, 2017 1:00 AM - Now that the presidential election is over, will it ever really end? Not if Donald J. Trump and the cable news networks get their way. Having made the election into a pro-wrestling spectacle, the Twitter-addicted president-elect and his ratings-hungry enablers at CNN, Fox News, etc. appear determined to turn the United States government into an endless reality TV program. The hallmark of reality TV, of course, being sheer unreality. Absent terrorist attacks and weather-related catastrophes, however, political melodrama is the best known way to keep people watching what we quaintly call "news."
