She's learned her fitness lessons well
Apr 30, 2012 5:58 AM - When I look back at the past few months, little went as I expected. Would I have asked for a torn knee ligament? Not hardly. But I learned how committed I am to rebooting my life when I had to work out four times week with an injury instead of quitting. The injury meant I had to place an even greater emphasis on good eating to compensate for the lack of cardiovascular workouts. I learned more about what I eat and why than Id ever anticipated.

With trainer's help, reluctant muscles cooperating
Apr 23, 2012 6:01 AM - Knowing what Im going to be able to do during any given workout is like hitting a moving target. All trainers need to be flexible in their plans with their clients, but trainer George Gersch was certainly handed a challenge when they gave me over to him! Every time I show up for a workout, George begins by asking how I feel that day. We go from there. If I dont respond with enough details he starts targeting the body parts hes concerned with back, knee, hip, etc. Then he formulates a plan on the spot based on my pain levels.

Seeing progress gives her a real boost
Apr 16, 2012 6:15 AM - I've always viewed success as black and white: did I hit a deadline, tackle a goal, conquer a fear -- or not? Anything short of complete success was total failure. This process of getting healthy, though, is teaching me about shades of gray. I'm pretty sure my trainer, George Gersch, has sought to impart this lesson to me since he met me in January. I've just been a little slow on the uptake.

Choosing good health worth extra time, effort
Apr 9, 2012 6:00 AM - Think fast: what's the last thing you ate "out" because you were "in a hurry?" Now, do you have any clue how many calories were in that item, or -- more importantly -- what its nutritional composition was? I'm going to guess no, because if you were like me you ate what you've had a taste for and was convenient at the time.

Enjoying these new bumps along the way
Apr 2, 2012 10:49 PM - There I was, standing in front of the toaster waiting for it to finish my sprouted spelt bread when I felt it. A rock hard lump. It was early in the morning and I was standing with my hand on my hip.

Fitness 'marathon' has a few bumps along the way
Mar 26, 2012 7:44 AM - After months of determined progress, I finally hit a proverbial wall. The voices in my head, I know them as discouragement, criticism and defeat, were all arguing loudly and simultaneously. You hear about the experience of "the wall" from marathon runners where toward the end of the race their body wants to quit and their minds must overcome the physical resistance to continue forward.

Keeping those Oreos as memories making a difference
Mar 19, 2012 6:15 AM - You just don't realize the willpower you're called upon to exercise when you're trying to reboot your life until Oreo celebrates its 100th birthday. Seriously. I didn't just make a simple little decision to bypass Oreos. I've chosen another alternative: to skip acting impulsively where food is concerned, and to ponder the consequences beyond the ''yum.' It's a daily, sometimes hourly, process.

No pain means a huge gain for journalist
Feb 27, 2012 2:08 PM - Imagine my surprise when I first got the nutrition plan that the folks at Push Fitness wanted me to follow. The five daily meals didn't trip me up. I'd been a daylong nosher for years. But, they want you to eat foods you can identify -- as in identify the "source food." Meat. Vegetable. Fruit. Etc. (You mean that's what a carrot looks like in its native habitat?!)
