Zengeler Cleaners Introduces 2022 "20-Year Club"
More than 55% of employees have 20 or more years of service

Zengeler Cleaners is celebrating 165 years serving Northern Illinois, making it the Midwest's oldest and largest dry cleaner. One key to reaching such an historic landmark is the remarkable longevity among its employees: this year, more than 55% of Zengeler Cleaners employees have been with the company for a minimum of 20 years. At a time when many companies are having difficulty recruiting - much less retaining - their employees, this level of loyalty and longevity is extremely rare in the business world.
"Long before COVID and the current economic climate, Zengeler Cleaners recognized how important our employees are to our success," said Tom Zengeler, company president. "We understand that loyal, talented and happy employees form the backbone of our ability to deliver the level of quality and service our customers have come to expect. We work very hard to assure our core values are reflected throughout the company, starting with how we train new employees whenever they join our company. We treat our entire team like family, working equally hard to create loyalty by providing fair compensation and competitive benefits in a safe working environment."
Loyalty starts at the top, of course, and three brothers of the current generation of Zengelers - Michael (Mike), Robert (Bob) and Thomas (Tom), combine for 139 years of service.
"Leading by example is another core value passed down from John Zengeler, my great-great-great grandfather and company founder," continued Zengeler. "My brothers and I saw the ultimate example of loyalty by watching our father, Bob, Sr., who spent 74 with the company prior to his passing in 2019. This fundamental principle is reflected by another simple yet important fact: a member of the Zengeler family has led the company since our founding, through the Chicago fire, the great depression, two world wars and several other crises that most other companies just couldn't survive."
Here are the members of Zengeler Cleaners' 20 Year Club, listed in order of their longevity and with their current years of service in parentheses. Michael (Mike) Zengeler and Joanne Koutsovitis (48); Robert (Bob) Zengeler, Jr. (47); Thomas (Tom) Zengeler and Alyce Kingsley (44); Joan Nebel (41); Fernanda Estela (38); Nancy Brookman (36); Hector Alvarado (34); Jose Gil (32); Patricia (Pat) Miller (28); Rosalba Perez (27); Gloria Hernandez (26); Bethany Amour (25); Patricia Moreno (24); Icela Chevez (22); Caremla Teliz and Fernando Ocampo (21); Mark Gums (20); and, joining the 20-year club at the end of the year are Peter (Pete) Donis and Petra Rios.
