College of Lake County (CLC) has been working to add to Waukegan's vibrant and historic art community. This summer, the first studio art class is being offered at the college's Lakeshore Campus.

Join successful artist and CLC art instructor Katrina Davis-Salazar in her brand-new class, Inspiration Project: Storytelling and Serial Imagery.

Last fall, CLC began a series of free art workshops at the Lakeshore Campus led by Davis-Salazar. The workshops were met with a ton of positivity, with great attendance at the winter and spring sessions.

This response from the community helped further demonstrate the benefits for both Waukegan and CLC furthering an arts relationship.

"CLC has resources, and Waukegan has an amazing arts community," Davis-Salazar said. "Art classes will add another layer of accessibility, connection and equity."

In this mixed-media painting and drawing course focused on self-expression, students will create a large amount of art quickly. Davis-Salazar said using a variety of materials is a great way for students to find their own artistic style.

"Mixed-media is the easiest form of art for students to self-express," she said. "It's accessible to all skill levels."

The plan is to bring more forms of art to the campus in the future. Visual art was the obvious starting point because it's something students can easily practice on their own time.

This opportunity is also made possible thanks to the new Student Center at Lakeshore. The creation of more space will allow more programs to offer classes at the location.

"Art is on par with math, science, and English," Davis-Salazar said. "Art isn't just about enrichment. It is a necessity."

Registration is open now for summer classes which begin June 6.
