Since 2012, the Glen Ellyn Public Library has tied its Summer Reading program to a philanthropic cause -- embracing the volunteer spirit of the community -- and challenging members to not just read, but to read with an impact on the community.

This summer, the library has partnered with World Relief, a global humanitarian organization that works locally to help serve the most vulnerable and challenges readers to achieve a combined reading goal of 40,000 points.

"We are always excited to partner with organizations in our community to work toward shared goals that also encourage reading," said Dawn Bussey, library director.

If the community reaches this goal, the Friends of the Library and the Glen Ellyn Library Foundation will each donate $1,000 to World Relief.

Anyone can register, and the library offers Youth, High School, Adult, and Adaptive challenges.

The Adaptive challenge features shorter reading goal increments for shorter concentration sessions, single-step concrete activities, and less daunting completion requirements.

The 2021 Summer Reading offers incentives along the way and encourages participants to "Read to Color Your World." Register for the High School, Adaptive, and Adult challenges and receive a premium chocolate bar. Read for 5, 10 or 20 hours in the Youth challenge and receive links to curated content from community partners like School of Rock, Marcel's, and Fred Astaire Dance Studios Glen Ellyn.

"We want to make sure that everyone knows that Summer Reading is not only back -- it never left! We read our way through the pandemic in the summer of 2020, and will be here supporting our community at every opportunity," Bussey added.

This summer, the library is proud to partner with World Relief for 2021 "Summer Reading: Read to Color Your World."
