A leading voice in conversations around mental illness will be the next featured guest in Benedictine University's "Journeys in Leadership" speaker series on Wednesday, April 14. The virtual program will be 7 to 9 p.m.

Alexa James has been the chief executive officer of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Chicago since 2014.

Under her leadership, the organization has built partnerships extending throughout the Chicago area and Illinois that strengthen the community's response to mental health. Prior to her appointment as executive director, she worked with children and adults living with mental health conditions.

During the event, James will speak for about 10 minutes on her life and career, then will answer questions from a panel of faculty, staff, alumni and students. For the third part of the event, Lazich will answer questions from participants in the Zoom call.

"Alexa has brought the message of strong mental health support to so many different groups," said Phillip Hardy, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Political Science and leader of the committee that found the speakers. "In particular, she has done a lot of work with police officers."
