A Wheeling middle school went into lockdown Tuesday after reports of a student on campus with a handgun, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

At 11:52 a.m., Wheeling police responded to Holmes Middle School, 221 S. Wolf Road. The school staff already had put the building on lockdown, authorities said.

Police and administrators conducted interviews, and students were released early.

No one was injured, and authorities said there was no wider threat to the public.
