Loaded gun leads to arrest in Des Plaines

A Des Plaines man was arrested Friday night after police stopped a speeding van in the city and found a loaded handgun inside, authorities said.

Joseph Assenato, 54, of the 1200 block of White Street, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and ticketed for speeding, police said.

 

The encounter occurred about 10:30 p.m. on the 800 block of West Oakton Street.

Assenato told an officer he had a gun in a door compartment after the van was pulled over, a according to a news release. Assenato said he had a concealed carry license, but it had expired, police said. Assenato's Firearm Owner's Identification card had been suspended, too, police said.
