Supporters of peace in Ukraine stood together Wednesday at Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich.
Ukrainian flags and glow sticks were provided to participants, and index cards were available to write messages of peace. Lake County Board member Jessica Vealitzek said a few words, and singer/songwriter Kent Lewis played guitar.
The half-hour event organized by the Ela Peace Project concluded with a moment of silence for those affected by the war and hopes of a swift cease-fire and withdrawal of Russian troops.
Friends of Ela Peace Project plan to install a peace pole in Lake Zurich's Ela Park in time for the International Day of Peace in September. The purpose of the project is to foster peace and embrace the diversity of Ela Township, where more than 60 languages are spoken, according to Lake Zurich resident and group co-founder Shari Gullo.
