Crystal Lake High School District 155 on Tuesday finalized the sale of its now-closed Haber Oaks Campus in Cary after first approving a purchase agreement for the property in 2018.

The 13,000-square-foot property, which sits on almost 3 acres, was sold for $700,000 to Elm Tree Properties LLC. The district plans to use the proceeds to continue improving district facilities, according to a news release.

District 155's board approved a purchase agreement with Elm Tree Properties in December 2018 for the property at 400 Haber Road in Cary.

Haber Oaks used to house the Crystal Lake-based district's alternative education program, which was relocated to Crystal Lake South High School. Now, a developer is planning to turn the space into senior apartments.

"Two years ago, we had an opportunity to offer students who attend Haber Oaks Campus additional learning opportunities while using existing space at Crystal Lake South High School," District 155 Superintendent Steve Olson said in a statement. "Now that the sale has been finalized with Haber Oaks Campus, the expenses and resources to maintain that facility will now allow us to focus on our current student needs and facilities."

Elm Tree Properties plans to add a second story to the building and convert it to a 24-unit senior apartment complex. Around the building and at the periphery of the site, 11 duplex buildings with 22 individual units also are planned.

The Cary Village Board approved the redevelopment of the existing building in September 2019.
