Lincolnshire officials are poised to enact a ban on the sale of recreational marijuana in the village. A large majority of village residents who attended a public discussion on the topic this week said they don't want it in the community. Associated Press/March 2019
Following a public discussion Tuesday night, Lincolnshire officials are leaning toward banning businesses that would grow, process or sell marijuana for recreational users.
About 100 people filled the boardroom at village hall for the discussion, Village Manager Brad Burke said, and those who spoke against allowing such businesses vastly outnumbered those who favored them.
An ordinance formally banning cannabis-related businesses in town will be needed, as will a public hearing on that proposal. A hearing date wasn't immediately set.
Starting Jan. 1, anyone 21 or older in Illinois can possess up to 30 grams of cannabis, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate and 500 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. State-licenses growing, cultivated and sales facilities will be allowed, too. But individual communities can restrict or ban cannabis-related businesses.
If the village leaders approve a proposed ban, Lincolnshire would join fellow Lake County communities Long Grove, Lake Zurich and Grayslake in barring sales of recreational marijuana. Buffalo Grove, Mundelein and Wauconda officials have indicated they're likely to allow it, while several other towns, including Vernon Hills and Libertyville, remain undecided,
