Donate school supplies to Apple Tree Campaign
Don't mention this to the kids, but summer is more than halfway over and it's about time to start thinking about buying school supplies.
Stores in town are already offering some great back-to-school deals. So, whether you have children in school or not, this is the perfect time to pick up some items to donate to Palatine Township's annual Apple Tree Campaign.
Last year, more than 1,200 students from low-income families received items through the Apple Tree Campaign, which is in its 20th year.
The township is collecting the following items: backpacks; index cards; yellow highlighters; "Trapper Keeper" binders; spiral notebooks; #2 pencils; both wide-rule and college-rule notebook paper; red pencils, black, blue and red pens; pencil boxes and cases; black, blue and red erasable pens; Kleenex; markers; clipboards; pocket folders; glue bottles and glue sticks; scissors; Ziploc bags; crayons; and colored pencils.
Donations may be dropped off during normal business hours through Thursday at the following locations: Palatine Township, 721 S. Quentin Road; Palatine Park District, 250 E. Wood St.; Brandt Financial Concepts, 134 W. Slade St.; Palatine Public Library, 700 N. Court; village of Palatine, 200 E. Wood St.; Palatine Elementary Dist. 15 offices, 580 First Bank Drive; Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St.; and Harris Bank, all Palatine and Rolling Meadows branches.
Monetary donations are also accepted and allow the township to purchase items that are lacking. Make checks payable to Palatine Township "Apple Tree Campaign" and mail them directly to Palatine Township, 721 S. Quentin Road, Suite 101, Palatine, IL 60067.
The school supplies will be distributed the week of Aug. 11 and volunteers are needed to deliver collection boxes and to assist with supply pickup, sorting, packing, and distribution. For information, contact Christine Favia, outreach coordinator, at (847) 358-6700, ext. 6161 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Favia is also looking for hairdressers willing to volunteer their time and talents between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. the week of Aug. 11 to provide complimentary haircuts to children involved in the Apple Tree campaign. Contact Favia at the above number to volunteer.
