Island Lake Village Clerk Jen Gomez has quit the post, citing conflicts with her work schedule and family needs.

Gomez gave Mayor Charles Amrich a letter of resignation dated Sept. 14, but the personnel move never was announced publicly in the weeks that followed.

Village officials confirmed Gomez's resignation Tuesday and provided a copy of her letter after a Daily Herald inquiry.

In her letter to Amrich, Gomez said she's quitting because she'd been told an earlier agreement that allowed her to have a flexible schedule to accommodate family needs was "off the table."

The letter didn't indicate who had made that comment.

Gomez offered to assist with the clerk's duties until the position is filled.

"I consider public service a privilege and wish this unfortunate situation could have worked better for all of us," Gomez wrote.

Neither Gomez nor Amrich could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Trustee Mark Beeson said he was disappointed by Gomez's decision.

"I would have hoped the personal issues could have been worked out," Beeson said. "It's an unfortunate departure."

Gomez was appointed clerk in October 2014 after Teresa Ponio took an extended medical leave. Ponio had been elected in 2013.

She died this past January.

Gomez's stint as clerk was her second. She also held the job from June 2011 to June 2012.

She quit unexpectedly before finishing her term the first time, too.
