Changes coming to ECC campus

Updated 8/16/2012 2:36 PM

If you return to Elgin Community College this fall and can't find the SRC or the IBC, don't fret. The college is in the process of changing building and parking lot names, as well as some of the classroom numbers across campus.

In all, there will be 5,000 new signs directing students to buildings, parking lots and classrooms

Instead of using a three letter system, the college will convert building names to a single letter. For example, the Health and Life Sciences Building will remain building A, while the Student Resource Center, or SRC, will be renamed building B. Parking lots have also been switched from a single digit to a letter. Building names will be changed throughout the fall.

Building room numbers will include both the old number and new number through the fall to assist students in identifying classrooms. The fall schedule is based on the new classroom number system.

An explanation of the changes and more information can be found on the college's website.

To comply with mandates outline in No Child Left Behind, 21 elementary and five middle schools in the district will offer parents and students a choice of transferring to another school. Schools identified for improvement, corrective action or restructuring under No Child Left Behind, must offer all students the option.

A letter from the district states that students will be ranked after Aug. 21. Students who have the lowest achievement and come from low-income families will have first priority, followed by students who are the lowest achieving but do not come from a low-income family, then all other students based on achievement.

The district will review enrollment at requested schools to determine the number of spaces available. Approved and denied notifications will be sent by mid-September, according to a letter posted on the district's website.

For more information, including forms and a list of eligible schools, go to the district's school choice information page or call (847) 888-5000, ext. 6980 or 5760.
