Eastview students raise funds for sick classmate

Updated 3/2/2012 9:48 AM

Students at one Elgin Area District U-46 middle school banded together last month to help a sick classmate by shaving their heads or donning a colorful new hair accessory.

More than 100 students from Eastview Middle School in Bartlett attended a fundraiser for Logan Williams, 12, a classmate who was diagnosed with cancer on Christmas Eve last year. The fundraiser, which was held Feb. 12 at the Bella Vita Salon in Streamwood, raised about $3,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Logan's mother, Karen Williams, said Logan had spent 15 of the first 30 days of treatment in hospital. Logan has not been able to return to school so seeing all of his friends at the fundraiser gave him strength and a huge boost.

District 158 goes retro: If you're a child of the 1980s, or just a fan of some really bad music, here's a show you'll want to check out.

The Huntley High School Fine Arts Booster Club will present the Chicago Spazmatics at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, in the school's Performing Arts Center.

The rousing '80s show features skinny ties, gelled hair and horned rimmed glasses, as well as the sights, sounds and dance moves we'd rather forget. The Spazmatics will put their flair on favorites from the likes of Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, WHAM and Devo.

Tickets are $15 for mezzanine level seats and $20 for orchestra seating and can be purchased at huntleyfinearts.com. All proceeds benefit the fine arts program at Huntley High School.

So, ladies, bust out your best side ponytail, shoulder pads, acid wash jeans and legwarmers. For the guys, dig out your parachute pants, Members Only jacket and neon T-shirts. It's the perfect way to reminisce with your friends. Admit it, you love the '80s.

The Huntley Performing Arts Center is at 13719 Harmony Road, Huntley.

You could even start your totally '80s weekend taking in a performance of "Hairspray." I realize "Hairspray" is set in the '60s, but the John Waters film is an '80s classic.

Students from Marlowe Middle School in Lake in the Hills will present three performances at 7 p.m. March 16, and 2 and 7 p.m. on March 17. All performances will be held at the Huntley High School Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door starting one hour prior to the show.
