Road improvements planned at ECC

Updated 11/18/2011 3:04 PM

A major road project connecting two thoroughfares on the campus of Elgin Community College is under way and should be completed by mid-December as long as the weather holds out.

Construction of First Street north to Fleetwood Drive will create a secondary access to the campus from the north side. Champion Paving Corp. of Hampshire is completing the $269,800 project, which uses land between the Industry Training Center and a college-owned building at 1741 Fleetwood Drive to connect Hoffer and Fleetwood drives. This will provide better access to the college's eastern parking lots.

In addition, Hoffer Drive will undergo repairs between First and Second streets. That work is expected to begin in late May 2012.

The project is part of the college's Facilities Master Plan funded by the $178 million bonds voters approved in April 2009, a news release from the college says.

Convenient conferences: Elgin High School is making parent-teacher conferences more convenient for parents. The school will host two open house-style conferences from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the Elgin High School field house.

All teachers from the school will be available in the same location during the stated times so there is no need to contact the school to make appointments, a news release from Elgin Area District U-46 says.

Parents may enter the field house through Door 7.

Progress reports for the second quarter will be distributed to all parents who attend either day.

In addition, the school will host a community resource expo during the conferences, which will include the following agencies: Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice; Everest College; Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health; Arbor Counseling Center; Learning For Life/Explorers; The Community Crisis Center; Family Service Association of Greater Elgin Area; Hanover Township Youth and Family Services; and the YWCA.

Contact Elgin High School will questions at (847) 888-5100, ext. 5101.

See the stars: Also on Monday, Nov. 21, the U-46 Planetarium will host two free shows for district employees at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Employees are asked to wear their identification to gain admission. Immediate family members are welcome when accompanied by an employee.

The show will include a history of the building, a night sky presentation and a sampling of the planetarium's full dome movie.
