After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, ComEd is excited to introduce its latest summer STEM program, the ComEd EV Rally! Young women in Illinois can now apply to the ComEd EV Rally, a competition that challenges teens to build electric-powered racecars.

Registration is required. The deadline to enter is Monday, June 6. Register here:

The application is open to any girl who is an Illinois resident between the ages of 13 and 18. Every participant will receive a $2,000 scholarship for completing the program. They will learn from ComEd mentors, connect with peers, and apply their STEM knowledge to building an electric vehicle.

Thirty young women will work with ComEd women engineers to build high-tech racecars and race them in Chicago as they explore career pathways in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The competition includes build days the last week in July and first week of August and will culminate with a once-in-a-lifetime experience as participants race their cars in Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 6.

In addition to powering homes, businesses, and institutions across the Illinois, ComEd continues to lead the conversation on the value of science and technology education. Today, women make up 50 percent of the workforce, yet hold only 27 percent of jobs in STEM-related fields in Illinois, according to a study by the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition.

"This program gives the next generation of STEM leaders a head start and a chance to get hands-on with electric vehicles, which are an important part of our clean energy future and can help reduce air pollution in our communities as we address the climate crisis," said Gil Quiniones, CEO of ComEd. "Through the EV Rally, these young women will work alongside women leaders at ComEd who have built their own STEM careers and want to inspire the next generation of women in STEM."

The EV Rally is an evolution of the longstanding ComEd Icebox Derby, which ComEd launched in 2014 to educate and empower young women to explore careers in STEM and become the innovative workforce of the future.
