Roof fire at Schaumburg IKEA causes brief evacuation
No injuries were reported after fire broke out early Tuesday afternoon on the roof of Schaumburg's IKEA store, leading to a two-hour evacuation of the business.
Schaumburg Fire Department officials said a passerby reported dark smoke coming from the roof of the massive store at 1800 E. McConnor Parkway just before noon. Firefighters later determined the fire involved 22 solar panels.
Thirty-two firefighters arrived at the scene and the fire was brought under control with the use of an elevated aerial stream of water. IKEA was able to reopen just after 2 p.m., officials said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday. There was some minor damage to the interior of the structure as well, but a monetary damage estimate was not immediately available Tuesday.
