hello

The Daily Herald photo contest winners from the month of October.

Nearing the end of their season, these "toys" seem ready for a winter's nap after a busy summer. The colors of the kayaks, boats and canoes work perfectly with the fall foliage of the trees.

I like the beautiful fall colors along the river. This was taken in Northeast Wisconsin.

The Great Horned Owl as it peaks around the tree at Stillman Nature Center, South Barrington, on the afternoon of Oct 21, 2018. This owl, as the other birds at Stillman, had their handlers nearby, so that the public could appreciate the birds outside of their mews.

I came across this in a field of sunflowers near Gays Mills, WI. I liked the details in the flower as they swirl toward the middle.

Quoth the raven, " Nevermore," or so Daisy, the indoor cat, would like to think about the "bird" in front of her. She spends most of her waking hours stalking real birds on the other side of a glass window.

As my friends were preoccupied looking for something to eat, I couldn't help but notice all of the beautiful artwork painted on the buildings. Cartagena, Colombia was filled with color on every corner. This bird was one of my favorites.

While on safari in Botswana we saw these two lionesses stalking a small herd of impalas. They had unbelievable patience. While we were watching them they never moved a muscle. We had to move on after waiting quite a while for them to pounce. They are beautiful animals.

These two young elk bucks are practicing what will be a real battle over breeding rites a few years from now. I photographed this pair in Rocky Mountain National Park this past September.

Not sure who was enjoying this more ... the deer family munching on the new cut mulch or our cat watching the action!

A dog in flight to catch tennis ball. What I like most is you can see the whole dog, the ball and the scenery and in your mind you're able to envision what's gonna happen next.

My wife and I were vacationing in Italy a couple of weeks ago. we in the Garfagnana area outside Lucca and traveled the road along the river Serchio. We came across this bridge which has a lot of lore associated with it. The official name is Ponte della Maddalena, Bridge of Mary Magdalene. It's more common name however is Ponte del diavolo, Bridge of the devil.

This image was taken in August at Katmai National Park in Alaska. I especially like this photo since the grizzly bear seemed to be displaying his meal to me prior to enjoying it. Fishing for salmon is a common sight in this area but this pose was unique.

I worked at a Dude Ranch the summer after I graduated college. People looked down on me because I had a college degree and was cleaning bathrooms. But this- this view was one of reasons I did it. 'The Look Out'- Moose, Wyoming at Lost Creek Ranch.
