One man died after a motorcycle and a sport-utility vehicle collided Wednesday afternoon in Newport Township.

According to the Lake County sheriff's office, deputies were dispatched to the intersection of North Kilbourne Road and Route 173 about 2:15 p.m. The crash involved a 1999 Yamaha Motorcycle and a 2008 Jeep Compass.

The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary reports suggest that the man driving the motorcycle was approaching the intersection when the driver of the Jeep made a left turn in front of him.

Authorities said motorcycle driver was thrown from his bike. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Wisconsin. The driver of the Jeep, a 69-year-old Gurnee woman, was uninjured.

The area surrounding the crash was expected to be closed for two to three hours after the crash.
