McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks is seeking applications to fill the auditor position vacated last week by Pam Palmer.

Palmer, who was elected to her fourth term in 2016, retired to concentrate on her health and assist with her parents' care, she said in a December letter to the board.

She spent the last three years juggling her family's needs and running the auditor's office, which is responsible for financial reporting and record-keeping. This past year was even more demanding, she said, citing her own health concerns, her parents' additional health-related needs, and a new financial software planning in the office.

"The continuing situation has proved to be overwhelming," Palmer said. Her retirement, which went into effect Jan. 5, was an "extremely difficult decision for me to make," she added.

Franks will appoint a replacement to serve until November when someone is elected to complete the two years of Palmer's term.

Franks will choose the appointee, who must be approved by the county board, based on a formal application process, according to a news release from the chairman. A cover letter and resume must be submitted to his office by Feb. 5. Candidates must be 18 or older, registered to vote in McHenry County and a Republican.

Palmer, who worked in the office since 1998, said she will assist her successor with the transition. The position requires communicating with department leaders, board members and other elected county leaders regarding financial policies, procedures and performance.

"The auditor's office role is integral to the financial strength of McHenry County," she said.
