Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Hawthorn Townline Elementary and Dual Language schools were treated to a question-and-answer-style assembly with children's author Ann M. Martin in Vernon Hills.
Martin sat with school librarian Cathy Gross as she answered questions about her writing style and inspiration Thursday. Martin also discussed her new book "Rain Reign".
"I like writing because I used to read so much," said Martin, who also recalled listening to her father make up stories when she was a child.
Gross noted this was the first time an author has visited with students in the school's 10-year history.
"The connection from the print book that we have to the real author is going to make a big impact in their lives," Gross said.
Martin stayed after the assembly to sign books for the children.
