Letter: Caring for pets helps us
It was refreshing to read Bonnie Jean Feldkamp's July 28 column about learning over time to love dogs. Feldkamp writes that now she welcomes cats and dogs in her home.
When I was about 8 years old, I brought home two darling puppies within one year. My mother immediately gave away the two unfortunate puppies. Despite my tears and pleading, I never learned what happened to the poor creatures.
As soon as I was living on my own, I adopted a cat, the first of many cats and dogs I've owned and loved over decades. For several years, my husband and I lived on a farm in rural Illinois where we had several goats. The goats enjoyed tasty chow for goats and care for their entire lives.
I believe caring for pets helps humans realize we are not alone. Gazillions of creatures, from huge to microscopic, call Earth home. Understanding that can help humans understand that life is varied and interesting.
