We will pay price for immigration policy

There was a time when the U.S. led the world in exposing and responding to inhumane treatment of asylum seekers, those fleeing their native countries to save their lives and the lives of their children.

We are now the country under deserved scrutiny for separating and detaining toddlers to teenagers in warehouse fashion behind chain-linked fencing left to sleep on paper-thin mats on concrete floors. As each day passes, with unanswered questions about where the babies and girls are, how pregnant women are being cared for, how these families will be reunited, the situation grows more shameful and heart-rending.

No matter your stance on immigration, whether you choose to arm yourself with real facts or weaponize with patently false narratives fueled by racism and prejudice you may have read or heard online or cable news, we will all pay a hefty price, domestically and abroad. The damage inflicted on our fellow humans at the hands of our government ends tragically for us all.

Recently, the Trump Administration vacated its seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council. Frankly, we have no business being there until we return to a time when mercilessness is no longer driving U.S. policy.
