Endorsements: DeVito, Lyons, Mazur for District 38
The financial health of Big Hollow School District 38 is a top priority for the candidates seeking a spot on the board in the April election.
Incumbents James DeVito, Kevin Lyons and Julia Mazur face newcomers Tiffany Enters and Lauren Plescia. The five candidates are vying for four 4-year seats on the Ingleside-based school board.
DeVito, Lyons and Mazur have overseen the district during tough financial times. The board's actions to bring transportation and food service in-house have proved beneficial. DeVito says his 12 years of experience on the board will continue to help keep the district on course with its finances. Lyons is on the financial committee and vows to keep tabs on the state funding shortfall. Mazur calls herself a creative thinker and says she bring her knowledge as both a parent and a teacher to the table. Plescia is involved in the district as a parent, a regular volunteer and a participant in a community advisory council. However, she also is running simultaneously for Volo village board, and the Daily Herald has long-standing reservations about endorsing candidates who aim to serve on more than one elected board.
Enters did not complete the Daily Herald's candidate survey and did not respond to endorsement interview invitations.
So, the Daily Herald endorses DeVito, Lyons and Mazur to return for another term on the District 38 board.
