Endorsement: Cole over Yingling in 62nd House District
We're impressed with both candidates running for House District 62 in central Lake County. Incumbent Republican Sandy Cole, a former Lake County Board member seeking her fourth legislative term, is challenged by Democrat Sam Yingling, the current Avon Township supervisor. Both are passionate about representing the district and knowledgeable about issues facing its residents. They have similar views on several issues, including opposing pension cost-shift to the suburbs and favoring campaign contribution limits by political leaders. Yingling, who has pledged to stress a bipartisan approach if elected, has championed the need to consolidate and eliminate redundant layers of government to address budget and tax issues. Cole calls for a review of every state program and service with an aim to end those that don't work or are duplicated. We give the nod to Cole, an effective legislator who does her homework on key issues and understands the district. She is also an advocate for small business and opposes any lame-duck session vote on important issues. Cole is often quick to blame Democratic leadership for the state's problems, but she also reaches across the aisle and works collaboratively in her committees. We urge her to continue to expand her bipartisan efforts.
